Renovation building 130 - Institute of aerodynamics and fuid mechanics, DLR e.V

Facade restauration / fire protection

The Hermann-Schlichting-Haus / Building 130 is situated in the northwestern part of the property of DLR Braunschweig and borders directly on the airport Braunschweig-Wolfsburg.
In building 130 the Institute of Aerodynamics and Fluid Mechanics with its departments is located: Technical Accoustics (TA), Spacecraft (RF), Helicopter (HE), Center for Computer Applications in Aerospace Science and Engineering C²A²S²E², and Transport Aircraft (TF).
The building of 1972 consists of a main and two side wings. The main wing has five overground storeys and a further technology floor. At the junction of the main wing and the western side wing there is a partial basement. The western side wing has 3 overground floors. In 1973 a storey was added with a timber-frame-construction. The eastern side wing has 4 floors and was built in 1973 as a complement for the main wing.

40 years after the construction there were substantially complaints concerning the fire protection of building 130:
exterior walls in the inner corners of the building
In the area of the inner corners a flashover of a fire to other utilisation units must be prevented.
The enclosure walls of the stairwells had to be strengthened to the quality of fire walls and all fire loads (office inventory, copy facilities and mail center, etc.).
establishing of safe emergency exits
outdoor area: guarantee of enough space for the fire department
As a synergy effect the construction measures of the exterior fire protection ensure a minimization of energy consumption and resources to achieve an improved life cycle assessment.
In combination with these measures the facade of the building was restored and designed completely new, because the facade from the 1970s was unsightly and not up-to-date. In this context measures for summer thermal insulation, tightness and sound insulation of the exterior facade were realized.
Furthermore the roof was renovated and the foyer was redesigned.
The main entrance was designed barrier-free. According to this the surrounding traffic area and terrain were adapted. The space for the fire department was expanded; eaves, paths and vegetation were restored and complemented in certain sections after the completion of the building construction.
